You don't have to compromise your looks to economize -- you just have to know a few tricks.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Mascara
Dollar store conditioner
Petroleum jelly
Olive oil
Sugar
Cayenne pepper
Cinnamon
A lip brush
Cotton swabs
The occasional splurge
Men's shaving cream (optional)

Step 1: Save on mascara

Buy expensive mascara just once; after it runs out, wash and save the brush. The main difference between mascaras is the wand, not the makeup. Apply new, cheaper mascara with the brush that comes with it, then use your old one to fluff and separate your lashes.

Tip: A dried-out mascara wand also makes a great eyebrow brush.

Step 2: Make conditioner do double duty

Replace your shaving cream with dollar-store hair conditioner; it works every bit as well. Or use a brand made for men; they're usually less expensive. Get an unscented one if you don't want a "manly" fragrance.

Step 3: Buy petroleum jelly

Buy a big jar of generic petroleum jelly. It can serve as clear lip gloss, lip balm, makeup remover, under-eye moisturizer, and foot and hand cream.

Tip: If you have just a smidgen of lipstick left in the tube, mix it with petroleum jelly and use as lip gloss.

Step 4: Use olive oil

Use olive oil as a multitasker: To condition hair, rub one tablespoon on scalp, wrap in a warm towel, and let it sit for 20 minutes before shampooing out. For silky skin, pour some into your bath water. To turn it into an exfoliant, just add some sugar.

Step 5: Plump your lips for pennies

Plump your lips for pennies by mixing a sprinkle of cayenne pepper or cinnamon with a dab of petroleum jelly and applying to lips. It will irritate them just enough to temporarily swell them.

Step 6: Waste not, want not

Use up every bit of your cosmetics: Get the last smidgen of lipstick out of the tube with a lip brush. Revitalize a dried-out mascara tube with a few drops of hot water. Use a cotton swab to get into the crevices of little pots of eye cream or lip balm.

Step 7: Splurge!

Splurge on one or two extravagances. Woman cannot live on cheap cosmetics alone!

Video: Save Money By Eliminating Things You Don't Need

Howcast Video:

How To Save Money
By Eliminating 10 Things You Don't Need

Uploaded by  on Oct 6, 2009

Video Transcript:

Check out these relatively painless ways to cut back on your expenses.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Self-discipline
Sacrifice
Open-mindedness

Step 1: Ditch the paper

Stop buying unnecessary paper products. Use cloth napkins, mop up spills with dishcloths and rags, write shopping lists on the back of junk-mail envelopes, (and stick your coupons inside).

Step 2: Give up bottled water

Give up bottled water; almost 40 percent of it comes out of the tap anyway. If you don't like the taste of your local water, use a filter.

Step 3: Buy less food

Buy less food. The average American throws out 25 percent of the food they buy. Start monitoring what you're trashing so you can make better choices when you shop, and make an effort to eat food before it goes bad.

Step 4: Cut the phone line

Get rid of your home phone if you have a cell phone.

Step 5: Cancel your gym membership

Cancel your gym membership. Jogging, stair-climbing, jump-roping, hula-hooping, and dancing are all free, and that's just a partial list of what you can do to stay fit.

Tip: Canned goods and old milk jugs or detergent bottles filled with water all make good hand weights.

Step 6: Forgo the fast food

Forgo the fast food. If you really have a hankering, recreate the meals at home; all those "secret" recipes are online.

Step 7: Drop cable

Drop your cable subscription. More and more television shows are available online, and you can even hook your computer up to your TV set for the ultimate viewing experience.

Tip: If you're subscribing to cable TV all year just for one or two premium shows, it's cheaper to wait and rent the entire season on DVD.

Step 8: Pass on those jeans

Put down the new jeans: If you're like the average American, you've already got about eight pairs and wear only two of them anyway.

Step 9: Don't buy new jewelry

Don't pay the 100 to 400 percent markup on jewelry. Buy baubles for yourself and gifts for others at pawn shops and estate sales instead.

Step 10: Cut down on supplements

Get rid of unnecessary vitamins, unproven supplements, and worthless cleansing or fasting products. Ask your doctor what you should be taking.

Thank you Howcast for today's
Monday Morning Money-Saving Movie!

I don't agree with everything the video suggests,
but it does help you think of ways to save money.

I'd keep the gym membership,
because paying for it urges you to work out,
if only to get your money's worth.

If you don't want to get rid of your house phone,
you can, dare I say it,
get rid of your cell phone!

All the Best,
Anita
